I want to be sad, because I like the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and most other cars like it. On the other hand, it was completely and utterly redundant and pointless and I hate t o say I told you so but !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

It reminds me of back when Doug used to write:

Eventually the market caught on: the pricing didn’t make sense for what you were getting outside of saying you had a V12.
But DAMN I wish I had a V12.

Dead because the Mercedes V8s are so damn good.

Exactly. For the first two generations it was offered, the S65 genuinely was much faster than the S55/63. But recently, that stopped being true.

I’m sad. The pre-update S coupe was the last Mercedes I truly liked.
Then they dropped the sweet 5.5L in the 63 for the now ubiquitous 4.0L, and gave it that hideous fucking vertical grille. And now the V12 is dead too :(
Whatever. That’s just me yelling at the clouds.

V12 maintenance is already annoying. Add the inflated prices associated with an AMG and technological advances that allows for whatever power level you want with a V8, and the writing was on the wall.
Super-bad news for V12 fans, since this might mean the end of V12s from Merc, BMW, and Audi. You already can’t get a V12 coupe from either BMW or Audi anymore , and with the death of the S65, Merc will likely follow suit. Buy an AM while they’re still willing to give you the V12; Since they’re getting their engine bits from the Germans now , it will die there too sooner or later.

I take it back then. NONE of the germans will sell you a V12 coupe anymore. Get over to AM while the getting’s good because once they’re gone... they’re gone.

Huge, complicated engines are going the way of the manual transmission. Advances in both design and manufacturing have allowed reduced parts count and better efficiency. Sure, there’s a turbocharger providing more of the power and negating some of the simplification, but that’s driven downstream (hence no theoretical losses) and appears to be mature tech.
Makes me wonder how long Ferrari and Lamborghini will continue to make NA V12 flagships. They sure sound glorious and can, at least in Ferrari’s case, can rev to the sky due to the unique natural balance of a V12.

If Mercedes would just bolt two of the 3.0 I6 engines they have in the E53, they would have a 6.0 V12 making about 860 hp. That’s a proper flagship engine!
